Shock Absorber C-Washers

C-Washers - ideal for stopping the chassis from hitting the floor

We've been selling these little washers for many years now and have them manufactured ourselves.  The design has recently been updated, making them better quality and providing standardised sizes.  We call them Nylon C-Washers.  As the name and shape suggests, they are made from 3mm thick Nylon and are cut into a “C” shape. These are designed to slot on to the push rod of the damper, above the rubber bump stop to prevent the chassis grounding out.

We sell these in packs of 10 for 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4” and 7/8” diameter damper push rods.

How they work

The dampers used on coil spring damper units are fitted with bump stops.

The purpose of the bump stop is to restrict the suspension travel so that the bump stop is compressed before the chassis grounds on the road.

On most dampers the bump stop cannot be removed so it is not possible to adjust the height of the bump stop by changing to a longer or shorter bump stop.

One way round this problem is to insert 3mm nylon shims between the bump stop and the top platform of the damper. These C Washers are slotted so they can be inserted with a pair of long nosed pliers.

One way to check the position of the bump stop is to remove the road springs, fit the damper to the car and lower the chassis. You will then be able to assess the dimensions needed on full bump. The number of C-Washers can be changed to give the correct position.
