Motorsport Helmets, how to measure for correct size

HOW TO MEASURE

To establish which size helmet you may need, first you need to measure your head. This is done by measuring the circumference of your head, above the ears across your forehead and around. You may need to get someone to do this for you as it can be tricky keeping the measuring tape horizontal.

Now you have your measurement

If your measurement falls in between two measurement sizes listed, for example you measure 58.5cms, we would recommend going for the smaller helmet size.

Things to note:

  • Arai helmets always tend to fit smaller than Bell. So you may fit a Bell in a Medium but need a Large in an Arai.
  • Stilo helmets seem to fit regularly up to Medium, then the Large upwards is a seemingly big jump up in size.
  • Sometimes, the helmet you initially want may not always be the best fitting, some people have head shapes that fit Arai really nicely, some have head shapes that fit Bell really nicely. As we often say, “the helmet tends to choose you, not the other way around”.
  • A helmet should always fit tight. It should not just slide on really easy and there should not be excessive side to side movement. Your cheeks should be pushed up and there should be pressure on most areas of your head. Secure the strap and try to roll the helmet off your head from the back, forwards. It will roll, but you MUST not be able to pull it off under any circumstances.
  • The helmet must not be so tight that it causes pain or headaches in use.
  • Remember; the helmet will “bed” to your head shape after a few uses, this is important to remember if you are replacing a very worn helmet.

Purchasing a new helmet is a very personal thing, and with the huge range of helmets now available we always recommend to come and try a few on in our show room. It’s very difficult to get the correct fitting helmet first time by mail ordering. Even different models from the same manufacturer fit differently!
