The DMS range of Varley Red Top high performance race and rally batteries were originally designed to start fighter aircraft engines, and to withstand the shock and vibration experienced in combat aircraft. The pure lead technology employed offers excellent cranking performance, with high discharge currents of up to 2000 amps.

Specification and features include:

  • Range of capacities delivering exceptional high cranking current.
  • Maintenance free.
  • Small size and lightweight.
  • Flame retardant ABS case.
  • May be fitted in any orientation.
  • Will not leak electrolyte even if outer case is damaged.
  • May be stored up to 24 months from full state of charge (20°C).
  • May be recharged using a dedicated charger or standard car charger.
Installation tip: The Varley Red Top batteries can be installed upright or on their side. These batteries have cranking current capability offering up to 50% improved high rate performance over similar size conventional batteries- note this when sizing.
Monitoring Battery State of Charge

The table below gives the open circuit voltages that indicate the state of charge. Figures shown represent readings after 24 hours rest.

Charging on the Vehicle
Red Top batteries are compatible with the standard alternators used on racing and rally cars. The alternator should be set at 14.4V (25 oC).
Charging of Varley Red Top Batteries

12V 500mA maintenance battery charger designed to be connected to the car when not in use, ensuring the battery is fully charged and ready for the next event.
12V 3 stage 2.7A dedicated charger is designed to maximise overall battery life and condition batteries for peak performance. It may be left charging indefinitely on any of the Red Top batteries without causing damage.
NEVER LEAVE BATTERIES IN A DISCHARGED CONDITION AND DO NOT BOOST CHARGE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

See below for minimum recharge times using Red Top Multi Stage Charger.

See below for charging times using a normal car battery.
DO NOT CHARGE FOR LONGER THAN THE TIME SHOWN AS THIS WILL REDUCE BATTERY LIFE.
